To commemorate Wrentham winning the ‘Village of the Year’ competition for the tenth time a Hawthorn tree was planted on the verge opposite the Old Town Hall. At the same time a new village notice board, made by two village craftsmen, was unveiled. This had been funded by the village’s millennium committee with money left over after completing the garden scheme around the village sign.
Waveney District Council Chairman Sandy Keller, Wrentham Parish Councillor Tony Kemp (who was standing in for the Parish Council Chairman David Reeves) and former Parish Council Chairman Sylvia Chatten planted the tree.
Mr Kemp said “We have always had a good community spirit here - we never find it difficult to get people involved to make a good show for the awards.”
“This is a prestigious award and we look at the whole village when we look to make it attractive - hanging baskets, winter flora, hedgerows, all the things you would expect, and together we achieve the ambience we are looking for”. He also added that traffic on the A12 was always a problem and that the village had been looking at the prospect of a bypass since 1947.
Mrs Keller replied “ When you get a village looking like this when you have got the A12 running through the middle, there is a great deal other villages can do if they only take up the challenge. It gives people a sense of pride and that can go through the generations -
and if everyone takes up that pride we would have a little less vandalism around”.
